PACKAGE OR SPLIT SYSTEMS
Split system air conditionings and heat pumps have an outdoor section and an indoor
section. The outdoor section contains the compressor and fan, but it uses the indoor section (air handler or furnace) to distribute
cool and warm air.
Package system air conditioners and heat pumps have all the components of a split system, contained
in a single outdoor section.

SEER RATING
Air conditioners and heat pumps use the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating to measure the cooling
efficiency. Heat pumps are also rated for heated Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) to measure the heating efficiency. In
all cases, the higher the rated number, the more efficient the product.

COOLING CAPACITY (TONNAGE)
Air conditioner sizes, also referred to as cooling capacities, are measured in British Thermal
Units per Hour (BTuH). One ton is equal to 12,000 btuh's. A unit that has too little capacity may not keep the whole house
cool, while an oversized unit will cost more and be more expensive to run.

CHOOSING A CONTRACTOR
There are several factors to consider when selecting a heating and cooling contractor.
The
contractor should be licensed, well trained, and experienced in installations and/or service. The contractor should also be
insured and bonded.
A good HVAC contractor will own and use refrigerent recovery equipment, and be certified to
handle refrigerent in cooling systems.
Always obtain a written contract or proposal before allowing a contractor
to install a new system, and make sure to inquire about warranties.
And the contractor who gives the lowest price,
may not be the best choice. Paying a little more may get better equipment and better service. Carefully examine any contract
or proposal to ensure that you get the equipment and service that best meets your needs.
